Webster Travel Baseball (WTB) has been in existence for 15yrs and now is a formal non-profit organization incorporated in New York State. Our application to become a tax exempt 501(C)(3) organization was accepted by the IRS. All donations and sponsorships (begining April 19, 2012) are NYS and Federal tax exempt and are deductible. Any donor or sponsor should see their tax advisor for additional information. All WTB teams are customarily called the Webster Warthogs. Our 17u team was called the Rochester Rage for a couple years, but that brand has ended for now.
WTB is a member in good standing on the Town of Webster’s Youth Sports Council (www.websteryouthsports.com). WTB coordinates, through the WYSC, with the Town of Webster and the Webster Central School District for the use of Webster fields and facilities. Warthog small field teams (12 and under) will now play its games on Webster Rec Field C and A and B as needed.
WTB’s mission is to operate as a player development baseball organization for youth in the Webster School District and keep the top talent in Webster on Webster teams. Our goal is to form teams comprised of the best baseball players in the Webster School District and have them play in the best travel league. Each season we intend to form at least one team at each player age, 8u through 19u, from the top talent in the Webster School District; and occasionally we form two teams at an age depending on tryout results. Each team schedules routine Winter practices from Jan to April at the Thomas Fieldhouse and Premier Sports Dome. Additionally, each team provides some level of tournament exposure for player development. Tournaments provide multiple opportunities for the personal growth a player can gain from multiple single elimination baseball challenges. Our goal is to not only help a player advance his/her physical baseball skills, but also their game strategy knowledge, situational awareness, and their mental toughness. We focus on getting the best Webster players playing together on fun teams with great coaches and having great experiences together throughout their youth career; vs a national corporate agenda. We do not force players to also play house. Our teams plan a schedule that keeps a player busy all season with league and tournaments and practices (best we can fit in). The best Webster players will continue to play together on their school teams.
Travel baseball is for the advanced player who is serious about learning and pushing themselves to improve and listen to instruction from dedicated coaches. All WTB Coaches are certified by an approved nationally recognized coaching certification program prior to the season starting. We strive to develop baseball players who hope to play baseball in the Webster Central School district and other advanced levels of play. We also provide references to local professional instructors that players should utilize in order to advance their hitting and pitching mechanics beyond what our volunteer coaches can provide.
Warthogs teams play in the Monroe County Baseball Region (formerly Babe Ruth) (www.mcbaseballregion.com) with teams from all over the five county region. MCBR has been in existence for 25 years and is home to the highest talent in the region. Home games are played at Webster Rec Field C, Basket Road turf, Spry, Willink and Varsity school fields. 8u-12u normally play Fri/Sat/Sun each week April 20-July4. Our big field teams normally start their season at the very end of the school baseball season and play games twice a week. Tournaments occur throughout the regular season and through Early August, and are usually in the Rochester and Buffalo area. Sometimes a team will travel to OH, PA, and other states in the Northeast and Midwest.
Tryouts are conducted in late August and September with teams being formed shortly thereafter. Player selection and the size of the team is at the discretion of the head coach but is typically from 11-12 players with several alternates. Tryouts are publicly announced and usually conducted on at least 2 separate dates. Although returning players are well known by their coaches, it is not uncommon for one third of the team to be comprised of new players from year to year. The board and coaches are committed to ensure all players are evaluated and teams are selected in a fair and equitable manner.
The total player cost varies by team and depends on the number of leagues and tournaments each team commits to, but typically ranges from $400 to $800 for 9U-19U and $250-$350 for 8U. The cost for our 12U team to attend the weeklong Cooperstown Dreams Park national tournament is an additional cost above these amounts; typically around $1,400 per player minus refunds from fundraising efforts. Parent accommodations would be extra. The Dreams Park team is organized separately at the discretion of the 12U head coach and is a separate commitment than the regular season 12U team. Each team conducts fundraising activities at its own discretion.
